The Hierarchy of Racial and Cultural Needs of Transracial Adoptees and Fosterees

Summary: Dr. Chaitra Wirta-Leiker (psychologist, transracial adoptee of color, and transracially adoptive parent) guides participants in this presentation through the nuanced aspects of raising a child of color in a multiracial family. Using her proprietary adapted model of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, she provides insight into your child’s physiological, safety, interpersonal, emotional, and achievement-based needs in relation to their racial and cultural identity.

Application: This is beneficial to the way we can support youth who were adopted and their adoptive parents. This presentation provided ways for youth who were adopted to feel included and supported including an acknowledgment, appreciation and practice for the youth’s culture and of who they are.
