Improving Youth Engagement and Access to Mental Health Services

Summary: This report by the National Foster Care Youth and Alumni Policy Council highlighted the need for better mental health services for young people in foster care. The Council argued that young people should be actively involved in discussions about their mental health treatment options and should be educated about their rights while in care.

Application: All professionals working with youth should review these recommendations to ensure that young people are always actively engaged in the development of their own treatment plans in addition to developing policy and practice around mental health issues, and in providing support to their peers who have experienced trauma.
