Summary: Children, youth, and families must have access to therapists who understand and are qualified to support them through the lifelong journey of adoption. This tipsheet provides principles of adoption competent mental health, tips on how to find the right therapist, and questions to ask therapists. Successful therapy depends on a qualified provider who knows that healing happens within the family and the work must be done within the parent and child relationship and who has a toolbox of interventions to help strengthen the parent and child relationship.
